Stories From My Class

One student’s responses to short story/bullying unit

THE IDEA

The idea for this humanities unit (and many of the materials I used) came from the awesome Scholastic book with the purple cover, Enactment Strategies That Work.  I’ve typed up this student’s work just as he wrote it.  Most of the written reflections were Do Nows.  The written components give an idea of the students’ thinking and learning, but the heart of the unit (application, in an enactment context, of the ideas re: bullying that students were wrestling with) is not represented here.  Of course the best part of the unit was the enactments, but I didn’t have the foresight to take video.

Written Reflection- Imagine that you are a social worker meeting with Rachel [the bullied student]. What questions will you have about her situation? What will you say to her?

• Why they was laughing at her? • Did the teacher do something about it? • What did she did? • Do kids laugh at you? • Do you like that knew school? • Would you like a transfer? • Do they teach respect in that school? • You should inord [ignore] them and tell the teacher.

Written Reflection- Why do kids get left out?

• Cause they act immature • Cause there snitchest • Cause there not “cool” • The way they dress • Because the whine and ruin the moment • Because there embarrassed with who they hang out with • Cause of there personality • Because people don’t like them

Written Reflection- Why do kids get left out of social groups? Do kids have to change who they are to fit in? Have you ever been left out? Have you ever left anyone else out?

• Some people get left out of social group in school because maby they are not that good in a sport. Maby because they are not smart inofe. Or maby because they are not popular, or is apart of a team or something. • Well people don’t have to change to fit in, they just need to be their self. And if they don’t fit you in, in a group make your own group, or party or what ever. • I left some people out but not for a bad reason: for example; I maby left someone out if we are already playing a game, or some thing like that.

Written Reflection- Are there different kinds of teasing? When does teasing become harassment?

There is different kind of teasing, for example, there is teasing like bothering kid, or bullieing somebody. Teasing=bullied, cursing, desrispecting, insulting, cutting on somebody and more. Kids make fun of for a lot of reason. For example; they make fun of kids for how they look, of how they act, for they being good kids and more.

Some people make fun of me for example; they make fun of me of how big I am, how strong I am, how I look and more. But some people don’t make fun of you in a bad way, some people make fun of you just playing around and having a good time. Most people just make fun of people of the way they look. Some jokes are funny but some of them is not. I don’t think that making fun of people is funny. For the reason; that some time when you make fun of somebody you might heart their feeling.

Notes for Correspondence Enactment- You are the good angel on Laura and Diane’s shoulders. What do they need to know, be reminded of, or be advised on? Write down what you would whisper into their ears.

Ok Laura, they are bullying you because there is or was a bully some where in their life. So they have pain or hate on them, and they don’t know how to said it in words, so they act it out. Diane, bullying is not good. It dosen’t make you feel better, it just make you feel more worse, for the fact that in the futer nobody is going to like you. Do something that helps you take your anger on something; for example; get a doll that you hate and bit [beat] it up or something like that.
